Self-Consumption Renewable Energy Plan in Cyprus

The plan for self-consumption of electricity from renewable energy sources in Cyprus

By the end of 2021, the plan for the self-consumption of electricity produced by renewable energy sources in Cyprus was approved by the ministerial council. The Ministry of Energy, Trade, and Industry of Cyprus have announced that the plan started operating and there are different categories where people can invest in photovoltaic systems connected to their household or business in Cyprus. The following are the types of categories available for investing.

Category A

Photovoltaic Systems that are connected through Net-Metering in Cyprus. In this category, the people who can invest are the ones who are consumers of electricity, the panels will be placed either on the roof or on the ground but only if it’s under the same property area as the building or household that is provided by the electricity. Lastly, the maximum power per photovoltaic panel that can be installed is 10,4 kW per consumption bill.

Category B

In this category, the renewable energy system is connected through Net-Billing in Cyprus. Here the people who can invest in Net-Billing are the ones who are consumers of electricity, the system will be placed either on the roof or on the ground but only if it’s under the same property area as the building or household that is provided by the electricity. Finally, the maximum power for renewable energy sources is 8MW per consumption bill.

Category C

Renewable energy systems are autonomous and not connected to the grid. This System is available for the ones who are consumers of electricity, and the renewable energy system does not have a limit of power available, but it depends on the needs of the consumer and the availability in the property area.

Category D

In this category, the photovoltaic system is connected through Virtual Net-Metering in Cyprus. The people who can invest in this category are household consumers and professional farmers. The photovoltaic systems must be placed in an area different from the property that is provided with renewable electricity. The electricity produced from the photovoltaics will be offset from the consumption of the property that is assigned but located in a different area. For household consumers, the maximum power is 10,4 kW while for professional farmers is 20 kW.

It’s important to notice that in categories A, B and D the energy produced by the renewable power system yearly, must not overcome 90 per cent of the electricity consumption that the property is consuming. Also, the surpluses from the same categories have been modified so that they are not deleted on the last bill of one year period but carried over for use in the next billing period.

Application forms for the plan can be submitted at the Regional Offices of the Distribution System Operator in Cyprus. They can be found online on the Electricity Authority of Cyprus website. The deadline for the available applications will be until the end of 2022 or sooner if the applications are more than the available capacity systems.
